- Admitted as a freeman of Canterbury as a butcher by copy of his father on 22 July 1839. Listed in Canterbury Poll of 1841 a freeman of St Georges. Moved to Ryde, Isle of Wight in 1842 where he was in business as a butcher and grazier. Prominent as a Wesleyan and in public life at Ryde.
1851 census: at Belgrave House, Nelson Street, Newchurch, IoW, Hampshire, Edward K (33, butcher), Lavinia (27), Mary (5, scholar), John (3, scholar), Edward (1) and a female servant.
1861 census: in Newchurch, IoW, Edward K (43, farmer of 84 acres employing 4 men and 1 boy and coal merchant employing 2 men), "Labinea" [Lavinia] (37), Mary (15), John (13, scholar) and Kate (4).
1871 census: at 156 High Street, Ryde, IoW, Edward Kennett (53, butcher), Lavinia (46), John (23, butcher) and Kate (14).
1881 census: at 'The Ferns', West Street, Ryde, IoW, Edward K (63, butcher employing 8 men), Lavinia (57) and Kate (24).
1891 census: at 187 High Street, Ryde, IoW, Edward (73, butcher) and Lavinia (66).
Reported in The Hampshire Telegraph on 19 October 1895:
Before the Isle of Wight Count Bench - John Minter and Edward K Minter were charged with cruelty to a horse. The case against Edward was dismissed but John Minter was fined 5 shillings and £2 9 shillings costs.
1901 census: Edward Kennett having died in 1900 his widow Lavinia (78) was at 187 High Street with her married daughter Kate GUILBERT (44), her husband Walter (45, self-employed printer) and their daughter Hebe (18).
Will proved 10 November 1900. Obituary in Isle of Wight Times and Hampshire Gazette 13 September 1900.
The National Archives ( ref. FAR/DD/59/2) hold a draft lease for 12 years relating to Aldermoor Farm, p. Newchurch, date: 1882 Sept 29 between (1) Lady Louisa Oglander and (2) E K Minter & J Minter. Consideration £206.10.6 p.a. It probably relates to this Edward Kennett Minter.
