1881 census(2): at the Merry Cricketers, Lower Road, Deptford, Robert MINTER (66, licensed victualler), Susan (65), Maude (26), Ruth (25) and Frederick (11, barman). Also married daughter Emily SUFFIELD (30) and her three children Florence SUFFIELD (2), Frederick SUFFIELD (2) and Alfred SUFFIELD (7 months).
* James is shown as unmarried, and his wife and 3 children were living with with Emily's parents. It seems that at the time of the 1881 census James and Emily had split up, although they had two children in the 1880s before Emily petitioned for divorce on 8 December 1885. She was granted a decree nisi on 8 March 1886 and a final decree on 14 December 1896. The divorce papers (at ancestry.com) indicate that the decree was granted on the grounds of "adultery coupled with cruelty towards the petitioner." Emily's petition for divorce mentions three women with whom her husband was alleged to have committed adultery, Alice Alwood, Lydia Campbell and another, unnamed.
1891 census: James, now 40 and single, was still living with his by-now-widowed father at 97 Plaistow Road, West Ham.
Emily, calling herself a widow, lived with two of her children in Lewisham - see her Notes.
1901 census: in High Street, Rayleigh, Essex (all SUFFIELD: James Thomas (married, 50, carpenter, born Poplar, London), Esther Annie (wife, married, 50, dress maker, own account at home, born Rayleigh) and Rosa Isabel (daughter, 8, born Plaistow, Essex).
Note: Rosa was the daughter of James's second wife Emily Caroline SCOTT nee COLBORNE. They married in 1892 but Emily Caroline died the following year in the same quarter as daughter Rosa ws born.
James married again in 1896, to Esther Annie DENNIS - it's she who appeared with James and his daughter Rose in the 1901 census.
1911 census: at St Johns, Eastwood, Essex (7 rooms) (all SUFFIELD: James Thos (married, 61, carpenter on own account at home, born Poplar, London), Esther Annie (wife, 62, married 15 years, no children, born Rayleigh) and Rosa Isabel Helen (daughter, 18, born West Ham, Essex).
