  Notes	January 2011: email contact from Nigel Ward, a descendant of John Ward. 1851 census: in Rope Walk, Brightlingsea, John (36, mariner), Mary (34), Eliza (6, scholar), Louisa (4, scholar), George (2, scholar) and Arabella (2 months). 1861 census: in New Street, Brightlingsea, John (46, oyster merchant), Mary (44), George (12, scholar), Ellen (10, scholar), John (8, scholar), Mary A (6, scholar) and Sarah (4, scholar). 1871 census: in New Street, Brightlingsea, John (56, oyster merchant), Mary A (54), Ellen (20), John (18), Mary A (15) and Sarah (13). John's first wife died in 1874. 1881 census: in New Street, Brightlingsea, John (widower, 66, ship smith), Ellen (30, housekeeper [crossed through]) and Sarah (23, milliner). John evidently married Jane HOLLANDS in Q2 1884 (Colchester 4a/618). It's not known what happened to Jane's first husband. In 1881 Jane HOLLANDS (27, married, born Brightlingsea), Henry HOLLANDS (2, born Brightlingsea) and John HOLLANDS (7 months, born Ardingly) were visitors at Pearmont Farm, Ardingly, Sussex. 1891 census: in New Street, Brightlingsea, John (76, formerly oyster merchant), Jane (wife, 37), A E (40, housekeeper), Annie (daughter, 5, scholar) and Horace (2, scholar). 1901 census: at 127 Sidney Street, Brightlingsea, Jane (widow, 48), Harry HOLLANDS (son, 22, mariner), John HOLLANDS (son, 20, mariner), Gertrude WARD (daughter, 16, house maid domest.), Annie WARD (15, nurse maid domest.) and Horace WARD (12). From Nigel Ward, Jan 2011: John Ward and 1st wife Mary are buried at the All Saints Church Brightlingsea Gravestone: 'Mary Ann Ward the beloved wife of John Ward who died March 20th 1874 Aged 57 years. My soul they Saviour Laud. Who all thy sufferings none who died for sin, but lives to God, and lives to die no more. Also of John Ward who died March 27th 1896 aged 81 years.'
