BIOGRAPHY: Captain Sylvanus Abner (Ab) MINTER was sworn into the Confederate
Army service on 10 May 1862 as Commander of Company K, 19th Texas Infantry
Regiment, Commanded by Coloonel Richard Waterhouse, Jr., Scurry's Brigade,
Walker's Division, Trans-Mississippi Department. Most of the Company's
service was performed in Arkansas and Louisiana. They engaged the enemy at
Mansfield, Louisiana, 8 April 1864; then a short time later, they fought at a
place called Jenkins Ferry on the Saline River in Arkansas. In that engagement
they lost several men's lives, including their First Sergeant Nathan PENN.
Also, another one of their men, Paul CRAIN, lost one of his arms.About six
months before the end of the war the Company was assigned guard duty at
Marshall, Texas, at the powder mill. That is where they were when it all
ended, and where the Company was disbanded. The Company roster included the
following men from the Pine Forest Area:
