    Notes
    • Entered on Seamans register in 1836 on the 'Britannia'.

Up until May 2007 no family was associated with John Thomas. An 1861 census entry for a Mary Minter described her as the wife of a mate, steam boat. An 1871 census entry for a 'P.S Minter' describes him as a mariner. Two of the children mentioned in the 1861 census entry were Emma Minter and John Minter. According to the IGI, Emma was baptised Emma Spice Minter on 14 Jun 1857 and John was baptised John Henry on 15 Dec 1861, both at Newhaven, both with parents John Thomas and Mary Minter. This information, together with the fact that 'P.S Minter' was said in 1871 to be 60 years old (implying a birth year of 1811) and born in Deal, has led to the conclusion that 'P.S Minter' was most probably John Thomas Minter, born in 1809 at Deal the son of Hockaday and Hannah Maria Minter. It's unclear what 'P.S' stood for.

August 2011: records have been found at the UK, Railway Employment Records, 1833-1963 (at Ancestry.co.uk) which almost certainly relate to this individual:
      - at 31 December 1871, a list of staff at the Newhaven station of the Steam Packet Department of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company included John Thomas Minter, age 62, store keeper, on a wage of £1.5.0 per week.
      - at 31 December 1877, a list of staff at the Newhaven Wharf of the Steamers Department of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company included John Thomas Minter, age 66, store keeper, on a wage of £1.5.0 per week.
      - at 31 December 1881, a list of staff at the Newhaven Wharf station of the Steam Boat Department of the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company included John Minter, age 72, ship keeper, on a wage of £1.1.0 per week.

1861 census: at 125 Railway Cottages, Newhaven, Sussex, Mary (36, wife of mate steam boat, born Dover), Catherine (10, scholar), Mary (8, scholar), Eliza (5, scholar) and Emma (3).

1871 census: at 4 South View Place, Newhaven, Sussex, P.S Minter (see above) (60, mariner, born Deal), Mary (44, born Dover), Kate (20), Emma (13, scholar), John (9, scholar) and Edward (5, scholar).

1881 census: on the vessel 'Lyons', John Thomas (69, mariner, born Deal). At 3 South View Place, Newhaven, Sussex, Mary (56, mariner's wife, born Dover), John H (19, packer), Edward (15, occupation indecipherable), son-in-law William THOMAS (28, checker) and his wife (Mary's daughter) Mary J THOMAS (28). Daughter Emma Spice (23) was a general servant, lodging in Battle, Sussex.

1891 census: now a widow, still at 3 South View Place, Newhaven, Sussex, Mary (66) lived with son John (29, packer) and daughter Emma (34, schoolmistress).
