| Notes |
- Joseph was probably born to his mother Ellen WARD and registered as Joseph Thomas WARD at Sunderland RD in Q3 1869 (10a/467). Ellen didn't marry James GOODLAD until 1872. I can't find Ellen or Joseph in the 1871 census but they both appear in the 1881 census with James GOODLAD.
1901 census: at "Tea Canister Inn"*, 51 Prospect Street, Holy Trinity and St Mary, Kingson-Upon-Hull, Yorkshire (all GOODLAD), Joseph T W (head, 31, wine merchant's manager, born Sunderland, Durham), Lillie (wife, 27, born Melbourne, Derbyshire), Edna May (daughter, 1, born Hull, Yorkshire) and Ellen (mother, widow, 57, born Greenwich, Kent).
*According to Paul Gibson, who runs the website "Hull and East Yorkshire History":
"The Tea Canister was the original name for the 'Ye Hole In The Wall' pub.
It had long been known as ‘Wauldby’s Wine Vaults’ (since around 1870), when that family took over the shop. It had been a wines & spirits merchant since c.1840.
The name change came after another new family took over the ‘pub’ in 1896.
It was a Bass pub, and I’m fairly certain that it only became a ‘pub’ as we know them, when it became Ye Hole In The Wall’.
It was damaged beyond repair in the blitz of the Second World War, closing on 31 March 1941."
1911 census: at The Regent, Carr Lane, Hull (8 rooms) (all GOODLAD), Thomas (head, 41, publican, born Sunderland, Durham), Lillie (wife, 36, married 13 years, 4 children, all living, born Melbourne, Derbyshire), Edna (daughter, 11, school, born Hull, Yorkshire), George (son, 9, born Hull, Yorkshire), Ellen (daughter, 7, born Hull, Yorkshire) and Frank (son, 5, born Bridlington, Yorkshire). Also two barmaids and two general domestic servants.
1921 census: at 247, Albert Avenue, Hull, Sculcoates, Yorkshire (all GOODLAD), Joseph Thomas Ward (head, 52y 1m, born Sunderland, Durham, not occupied for a living (invalided)), Lillie (wife, 46y 9m, born Melbourne, Derbyshire, General dealer (grocery etc) on own account at home), George Thomas (son, 19y 11m, born Hull, Yorkshire, seaman with Watts Watts & Co but out of work), Frank (son, 15y 3m, born Bridlington, Yorkshire, whole time school), Ellen (daughter, 17y 6m, born Hull, Yorkshire, clerk (bookkeeper) with Thornton Varley & Co Ltd, drapers of Prospect Street, Hull) and Ellen (mother, 77y 9m, widow, born Greenwich, Kent, not occupied for a living).
