| Notes |
- Thanks to James Earley for the following, from the Dover Express of 19th March 1859.
Mary Ann Hamilton appeared at Dover Police Court on 14 March charged with stealing "a pair of trousers, and sundry articles, worth 5s, the property of Alexander Aitkin of 29 Limkiln Street, at whose house she had been lodging." Mary Ann described herself as a married woman and had used the name Mary Ann Minter when she pawned the trousers. But during the hearing John Minter, who was called as a witness said that although he was living with Mary Ann they were not married*. The case was argued back and forth and finally the Bench was satisfied of the prisoner's guilt and sentence her to 6 weeks prison with hard labour.
* presumably John Minter was in fact John Morphew Minter who married Mary Ann in October 1859.
