| Notes |
- I haven't seen first-hand evidence that Samuel married Cecilia CARRÉ but some public member trees have this marriage. Certainly the birth of Cecilia CARRÉ matches the age of the Cecilia found in censuses.
1841 census of Jersey - a transcription found at http://members.shaw.ca/jerseymaid/helier8.html - includes, in Bath Street, St Helier district 8, Samuel COWLEY (20, carpenter) and Cecelia (20), along with Clement BAILHACHE (10). This entry probably relates to Samuel COWDY and his wife.
1851 census: at 2 Grove Terrace, Poplar, Middlesex (all COWDY), Samuel (33, Baptist Minister of Cotton Street Chapel*, born Island of Jersey), Cecilia (32, born Island of Jersey), John James (8, scholar, born Island of Jersey), Martha A (7, scholar at home, born Island of Jersey) and Mary S (1, born Chipperfield, Herts). Also a general servant, Ann POWELL, 19.
* According to Ancestry.com this chapel existed from 1822, was badly damaged in WW2 and the site cleared in 1945.
1861 census (1): in Lake Street(?), Leighton Buzzard, Beds, Samuel COWDY (head, 52, Pastor of Baptist Church, born St Helier, Jersey), a visitor, Edward HILL (18) and a servant, Eliza Hig--- (22).
1861 census (2): at Itchen Bridge Tollhouse, Southampton St Mary, Hampshire (all COWDY), James (head, 68, toll collector, Chelsea pensioner, born Ireland), Ann (wife, 61, born Carshalton, Surrey), Anne (daughter, unmarried, 31, born Jersey), Cecilia (daughter iin law, married, 42, born Jersey), Samuel Angus (grandson, 6, scholar, born Leighton, Beds) and William Walton (4, born Leighton, Beds).
1861 census (3): John James COWDY (18, iron merchants clerk, born St Helier, Jersey) was staying at 56 Florence Road, Deptford St Paul, with his uncle Jeremiah COWDY (qv).
1861 census (4): Martha A COWDY (17, scholar, born Jersey) and Mary S COWDY (11, scholar, born Chipperfield, Herts) were boarders at a school at 8 London Road, St Albans, Herts.
The following appeared in 'The Faiths of the World' of 1868:
I have great pleasure in appending my recommendation of the above work. S Cowdy, Baptist Minister, London

1871 census: at 13 Lorimer Square, St Mary Newington, London, (all COWDY), Samuel (52, Baptist minister of Arthur Street Chapel, Camberwell Gate*, no birthplace stated), Cecilia (51, born Island of Jersey), John James (28, unmarried, cashier --- ---- ---, born Island of Jersey), Martha Ann(?) (27, unmarried, music teacher, born Island of Jersey), Mary Susanna (21, music teacher, born -----, Herts), Samuel ---- (16, head clerk iron broker, born Leighton Buzzard, Beds) and William ---- (14, scholar, born Leighton Buzzard, Beds). [The writing on the census sheet is faded and difficult to read]
* this Baptist Chapel appears to have been mentioned (as Baptist Church, Arthur Street, Walworth) by Charles Booth in his London surveys between 1886 and 1903.
In the 'Transactions of the Royal Historical Society' of 1876, The Rev. Samuel Cowdy, LL.D appears as a fellow of the Society. (Source http://www.archive.org/stream/transactions04royauoft/transactions04royauoft_djvu.txt)
1881 census: at 13 Lorimer Square, St Mary Newington, London, (all COWDY), Samuel (63, Baptist minister, born Jersey), Emily J ([second] wife, 53, born Walworth, Surrey), Martha A (37, unmarried, born Jersey), William W (son, 24, unmarried, clerk, born Leighton, Beds) and Jessie M (grandchild, 6, born Walworth, Surrey). I haven't seen the original document.
