A private burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas. He died Friday at his Dallas home. He was 84.
Dr. Thomas was born in Kenna in the territory of New Mexico and grew up in Pine Forest, Texas. He moved to Dallas in 1924 and received his bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Dallas.
He was Baylor hospital's president from 1954 to 1957 and then moved to Parkland in the same capacity. He also served as a clinical professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
Dr. Thomas had a private practice, which he opened in 1942 near Baylor, as an internist specializing in cardiology.
His daughter Diane Williamson said her father retired in 1985 and continued to volunteer at Parkland by translating Spanish for Hispanic patients.
"He loved using his Spanish and helping people out with his spare time," she said.
Mrs. Williamson of Dallas said he was well-respected by his patients and other doctors. She described him as a "doctor's doctor."
"He loved the challenge of discovering and diagnosing a disease, because he was very good and talented in his field," she said. "He was always known for his wit and for his love of life and medicine and his quest for knowledge."
Dr. Thomas also was a former president of the Dallas Heart Association, Texas Club of Internists and the Dallas Internist Club.
Besides Mrs. Williamson, Dr. Thomas is survived by two other daughters, Kathy Williams of Plano and Sally Hanna of Dallas; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
