- 1911 census: as Edgar J Minter, 18, at school, born Hamble, John was staying at 5 Charles Street, Southampton, Hants (7 rooms) with his brother in law Sidney Josiah WILKINs, his wife and two children. Also present were Mary MOREY, widow, 75, old age pensioner born Lymington and Winifred E MAY (Sidney's sister in law), 20, no occupation, born Sandwich, Kent.
John was a gunner, number RMA/14988, in the Royal Marine Artillery on HMS Vanguard. He was 19 when he died, son of Isaac and Agnes Minter of 5 Charles Street, Southampton. His grave is number 27 in the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
HMS Vanguard sank at Scapa Flow with 800 crew members on 9/7/1917 when the magazine exploded.

He joined in June 1916 and after receiving his training at the Royal Eastney Barracks, Portsmouth, was posted for duty with HMS 'Vanguard'. He lost his life on July 9th 1917, when his ship was destroyed by an internal explosion at Scapa Flow. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.
