It's possible that Richard and Ann were counted twice; the following appeared in Hawkinge Lane, Folkestone (all BIRCH, all born in Kent) Robert (30, ag lab), Mary (30), Richard (8) and Ann (6). 1851 census (1): Richard (18, born Elham) was a house servant at Grove House, Dover Road, Folkestone, home of Ann CLARK (widow, 56). 1851 census (2): the following might refer to Richard's father and sister: in Gods Providence, Folkestone (both BIRCH, born Folkestone), Robert (head, married*, 42, agricultural labourer) and Ann (daughter, 16). * I think Robert's wife Mary probably died in 1847 so Robert would have been a widower in 1851. 1861 census: in Belle Vue Fields, Folkestone (lodgers with Walter & Mary WOOLGAR and their 2 children), Richard BIRCH (27, gardener, born Elham) and Maria (Richard's wife, 32, born Tiverton, Devon). 1871 census: at 6 Copenhagen Terrace, Folkestone (all BIRCH) Richard (head, 37, gardener, born Elham, Kent), Maria (wife, 42, born Tiverton, Devon), Richard J (son, 9, scholar, born Folkestone), Alfred R (son, 7, scholar, born Folkestone), Maria A (daughter, 5, scholar, born Folkestone), Mary E (daughter, 1 month, born Folkestone) and Ann J(?)
