Notes |
- Elizabeth was originally Elizabeth Janet Sharpe and was born in 1873 or 1874. The 1881 census shows an Elizabeth Sharpe, aged 8, a scholar, living with her family at Redbourn Common, Redbourn, Herts:
William Sharpe, 44, labourer, born Markyate St, Herts
Ann Sharpe, 37, hat sewer, born Redbourn, Herts
Caroline Sharpe, 9, scholar, born Redbourn, Herts
Elizabeth Sharpe, 8, scholar, born Redbourn, Herts
Alice Sharpe, 4, scholar, born Redbourn, Herts
Minnie Sharpe, 3 months, born Redbourn, Herts
In 1891 the family was still living at Redbourn Common, Redbourn, Herts:
William Sharpe, agricultural labourer, born Markyate St, Herts
Hannah Sharpe, 45, born Redbourn, Herts [Margaret Connolly believes this was the same person as the 1881 Ann]
Caroline Sharpe, 19, silkster, born Redbourn, Herts
Elizabeth Sharpe, 18, born Redbourn, Herts
Alice Sharpe, 14, born Redbourn, Herts
Minnie Sharpe, 10, scholar, born Redbourn, Herts.
Elizabeth's first husband was Albert Victor Beckwith and their marriage was registered at St Albans (3a/1226) in the 3rd quarter of 1899. In 1901, Elizabeth was at the Tin Pot, Gustard Wood, Wheathampstead, Herts. She was then 27, described as married, an inn keeper on her own account, born Redbourn, Herts. Her daughter Kimberley, aged 1, born Wheathampstead, was with her. But no husband. In the house next door lived a George E Beckwith and his wife Frances who, in the 1881 census can be found living in Lewisham, Kent with their children, including a 6 year old Albert V, who was born in Deptford. In 1891 Albert was 17, a waiter, living at 44 Catherine Road, St Paul Covent Garden, London.
Albert Victor Beckwith was serving in the Boer War when the 1901 census was taken. According to Margaret Connolly, Albert Victor and Percy Albert Minter returned to England together on the same boat, with Albert Victor wounded. He died on the boat and Percy gave Elizabeth his belongings and they ended up getting married and had six children. The death of an Albert V Beckwith, aged 29, was registered at Colchester (4a/345) in Q2 1902. Margaret Connolly says that Albert Victor was buried with military honours in Wheathampstead, Herts.
Albert Victor Beckwith and Percy Albert Minter were listed on the same page of a South Africa Medal Roll. They had both served in the X(2) Section Pom Pom Corps of the Royal Artillery.
A photo provided by Graham Minter shows that Elizabeth's two husbands, Albert Victor Beckwith and Percy Albert Minter, share a headstone at Wheathampstead.
