THE HENRY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va., Friday, Sept. 15, 1916, p. 8, col. 6:
      (edited)
Mr. Philip Ira Hodnett, one of the oldest merchants in Martinsville, died at his home on North Franklin Street about eleven o'clock Sunday night.
For the past year he had suffered with something like jaundice and while his many friends knew his health was not good, still they were shocked when the end came so soon.
He was about fifty years old and during the past twenty-five years has built up a substantial mercantile business here by square and honest dealing.
He was a deacon in the Primitive Baptist Church and served two terms on the Board of Supervisors of Henry County.
He is survived by his wife and five children, and four step children: Mrs. Bruce Coleman, Bessie, Philip, Rieves and James Hodnett; step-children, Bernice, Ray, Bassell and Orthneal Stultz.
He was twice married, first to Miss Lula Jones, second to Mrs. Sallie Stultz.
The funeral was conducted by Elder A. L. Moore, his minister, from the Primitive Baptist church.
      Burial in Oakwood.
      Pall bearers: R. E. Davis, E. J. Davis, J. H. Spencer, J. W. Jones, D. S. Davis and T. C. Matthews.
Flower bearers: J. B. Shumate, G. A. Giles, J. A. Brown, J. R. Brown, Robt. McMilllion, T. E. Gravely, E. L Davis and R. L. Hubbard. Appropriate hymns were sung at the church and grave by Miss Annette Fuller, Mrs. R. B. Semple, Mr. W. B. Burge and Mr. I. J. Groves.
