  Notes	February 2022: Pauline Kay Minter (great granddaughter) writes: "[The wife of] Richard Arscott was Johanna Marie Fourneau (born on Alderney) but for some reason she put her name on her marriage certificate as Mary Jackson. We have tried to find out why but to no avail. We know she had a very traumatic childhood so that may be a reason." The marriage index gives Mary's surname as FONEY; and this name appears on the enhanced birth index entries for the births of Richard & Mary's first two children. Until Feb 2022, my records showed Mary's name as Mary JACKSON - I've now changed it to Johanna Marie FOURNEAU. The 1911 census shows Mary, a widow, living in Plymouth with three of her children. Pauline Kay Minter gave me permission to add the following details: "Johanna/Mary eventually moved to London to run a shop in Raynes Park and lived in Brixton.  My father spent a short time living with her when his father died.  She eventually sold the shop and moved back down to Plymouth where she died. Annie Maud Arscott's (my father's mother) birth certificate shows her mother as Mary Jackson so the mystery deepens! We have to be aware that the Arscott family (mainly from the Buckfastleigh area) were many and there were quite a few Richards!! As to Johanna's childhood I have tried nearly everything to find out what happened to her when she was living with the Holman side of her family but I have always drawn a blank. I know that the grandparents and her uncles all emigrated to Canada during the 1860s and am in touch with a distant Canadian relative who has even sent me a copy of the family bible page with no mention at all of Johanna's mother (another Johanna). We have visited Guernsey quite a few times to do research and also Alderney and Sark where her father's (Thomas Fourneau) family came from but can find nothing about his life after Johanna and her sister were living with the Holmans. She had an older sister Elizabeth who eventually emigrated to Australia when she was a lot older. And I believe there was a baby brother so I am wondering if her mother and the baby died? So what happened to Johanna from 6 years to 17years I don't know. I did wonder if Richard had visited the islands and met her there as a teenager. I have done plenty of research on Thomas Fourneau family and they seem very prolific but why she didn't go and live with her cousins I don't know! I assume we will never know now. I did wonder for a while if Richard Arscott had gone on a holiday to Guernsey/Alderney and met her then and have had a quick look in the past on ships records but its quite a time consuming job."
