It's not known why, some time after 1881, the family abandoned the surname WASH. 1841 census: not found. John's parents were married in Q4 1848 (Braintree 12/49). John's father appears in the marriage index as John Harding Cornelius WASH. The bride was Mary HARRINGTON. 1851 census: in Messing, Essex, John Hardy Corn. WASH (head, 40, Greenwich Pensioners, born Finchingfield), Mary WASH (wife, 30, born Bardfield, Essex) and Mary A S WASH (daughter, 1, born Wethersfield, Essex). 1861 census: in Inworth Street, Messing, Essex, John H C WASH (head, 50, Greenwich Pensioner, born Finchingfield), Mary WASH (wife, 40, born Bardfield, Essex), Charlotte WASH (daughter, 11, scholar, born Weathersfield, Essex), Thomas H WASH (son, 7, scholar, born Messing, Essex), John H WASH (son, 5, scholar, born Messing, Essex), Charles H WASH (son, 3, scholar, born Messing, Essex) and Louisa WASH (daughter, 1, born Messing). 1871 census: in Inworth Street, Messing, Essex, John Hardy C WASH (head, 60, Greenwich Pensioner, born Finchingfield), Mary WASH (wife, 50, born Bardfield, Essex), Thomas H WASH (son, 17, groom, born Messing, Essex), John H WASH (son, 15, ag lab, born Messing, Essex), Charles H WASH (son, 13, ag lab, born Messing, Essex) and Louisa WASH (daughter, 11, scholar, born Messing). 1881 census: at 45 The Street, Messing, Essex, John H C WASH (head, 70, Greenwich Pensioner, born Finchingfield), Mary WASH (wife, 60, born Bardfield, Essex) and J Hardy WASH (son, 25, farm labourer, born Messing, Essex).
