THE following qualified Candidates for the Naval Medical Service have been appointed Surgeons in Her Majesty's Fleet:'97
..., Ernest Denman Minter,....
According to Geo. Warden Haines in 'Memoirs of the Minter family', Ernest was a surgeon in the Navy. He was on board the battleship "The Victoria" when it foundered after collision, [Vice-] Admiral Tyron, being on board, was drowned. Ernest was rescued and was given a shore appointment at Chatham; the exposure and strain developed rheumatic conditions from which he afterwards succumbed.
The story of the sinking of the 'Victoria' is found on several web sites. The collision, with HMS Camperdown, took place on 22 June 1893. According to one source: It is reported that the last words uttered by the stricken Admiral Tyron were: "IT'S ALL MY FAULT." And the Court Martial Board agreed!
The wreck of the 'Victoria' was found in 2004 off the coast of Lebanon. Some authorities have the Admiral's name as TRYON.
