Notes |
- 1851 census: James (21, a rail labourer) was lodging in Castle Bytham, Lincolnshire. Place of birth was given as Stredford, Suffolk. John J Minter on 7 November 2005: I only just heard today that his [James's] future wife Sarah Judson had a father called John Hale - and James is lodging with him! (John is shown on the previous page).
James and Sarah emigrated to Victoria, Australia, leaving Birkenhead on the 'Bee' on 14 January 1857. They arrived at Geelong on 18 April 1857. They raised a large family at Ballerat and Bendigo.
Judith Kinnear reports that the house in which James and Sarah Minter lived in Sheepwash Road, Sandhurst (Bendigo) was owned by Sarah. Both Sarah (d 26 April 1874) and James (d 15 September 1902) died intestate.
Letters of Administration for Sarah's estate were granted to her son, John Minter of Bridge Street Bendigo, on the 17 Oct 1903 in the Supreme Court of Victoria. Sarah's real estate was valued at 200 pounds and was identified as follows:
"all that piece of land being Crown Allotment Eight of Section 37 c situated at Sheepwash road Bendigo and on which is erected a five-roomed weatherboard house".
Daughter Emma's 1874 birth certificate provides James's date of marriage and a list of his other children. The list agrees with the known children but includes, between Elizabeth and William, Robert, 'dead', about whom nothing else is known. James's occupation was given as carter and his address as Back Creek, Sandhurst, Bendigo.
After Sarah died her cousin Mary emigrated to Australia and married James in 1876. At that time James was a carter.
The causes of James's death were kidney disease and heart failure - the verdict of a Magisterial Enquiry held on 16 September 1902. Letters of Administration were granted on 27 October 1902 to John Minter of Bridge Street, Bendigo, son of James, a contractor.
