| Notes |
- Baptised on the same day in 1855 as sister Mary Ann.
There are three anomalies in the records for Charles.
1. In 1871, a Charles Minter was working as a potman with a beer seller in Bow, London (which is compatible with his being a publican by the time he got married in 1877). But his birthplace appears to be 'Essex Bishop Stortford'. Essex is correct but Bishops Stortford is in Hertfordshire. Maybe the enumerator interpreted Thorpe-le-Soken incorrectly (but see item 3).
2. When he married in 1877 Charles gave his father's name as Abraham, a bootmaker. As far as is known Abraham was always an agricultural labourer.
3. In 1891, in the census space for 'Where born' it says 'Further information refused'.
Despite the above, the information presented here is thought to relate to Charles of Thorpe-le-Soken.
1871 census: at 42 Ordele(?) Road, St Mary Stratford, Bow, London, Charles (18, potman, born 'Essex Bishop Stortford').
Kelly's Post Office Directory 1880 lists a Charles William Minter at the 'George & Dragon' PH, 22 Greek Street, Soho, London W.
1881 census: at The King William, 49 Wellington Street, Deptford St Nicholas, London, Charles W (28, publican, born Essex, Thorpe), Margaret (30) and Ada (3).
On 12 September 1881 Charles appeared at the Old Bailey as a prosecution witness in the trial for simple larceny of Horatio Wiiliam May (22), Joseph Ensell May (26), Octavius Henry May (18) and Thomas Marling (61). They were accused of stealing a cart and two sets of harness. Charles Minter's part in the proceedings was brief:
WILLIAM MINTER . I keep the King William IV., William Street, Deptford - I let some back premises to Horatio and Octavius May as wood-choppers and dealers - all the prisoners had access to the place.
Cross-examined by Horatio May. I let the premises to your brother.
At the end of the trial the defendants were found not guilty.
February 1883 (Daisy's baptism): licensed victualler of 49 Wellington Street, St Nicholas, Deptford.
Kelly's Post Office Directory 1884 lists Charles William Minter at the 'King William IV' PH, 28 Wellington Street, Deptford, London SE.
London, England, Land Tax Records, 1692-1932 (at Ancestry):
1884, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1888, 1889, 1890 C H/CW Minter, 8 St Martins Street, St Martin in the Fields - rateable value £128, tax payable £2 13s 4d to 1885, £2 8s from 1886 on. In some years Charles is shown as C H Minter, in others as C W.
A much later (1909) listing shows Charles as the occupier of the same property but the owner as the London Brewery Co Ltd.
www.pubshistory.com indicates that 8 St Martins Street was a pub called The Feathers.
1891 census: at 8 St Martins Street, St Martin in the Fields, London, "C W" (38, publican), "Margote" (40), Ada (13), Rosy (9) and Florry (6). In the space for 'Where born' it says 'Further information refused'.
Rosy must have been Daisy Hannah born Q1 1883; she was a witness at her sister Florence Jane's marriage in 1908.
In 1911, Daisy gave her birthplace as St Martin in the Fields.
Kelly's Post Office Directory 1893 lists Charles William Minter at the 'Feathers' PH, 8 St Martins Street, London WC.
1901 census: not found. Judging from the 1891 census, the entry for 1901 should be in District 7 of the Strand section of St Martin in the Fields district. But District 7 is missing from the set of Strand records at Ancestry.com.
England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 (at Ancestry.co.uk, Nov 2010):
MINTER Charles William of 8 St Martin's Street Leicester-square Middlesex died 12 February 1908 Probate London 20 March 1908 to Ada Margaret Minter spinster. Effects £426 13s.
