Joseph William Minter, 87, of 62 Sunrise Avenue, Martinsville, VA died Thursday, October 08, 2009 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville/Henry County. He was born in Martinsville, VA on May 19, 1922 to the late Joseph Jackson Minter and Ruby Elizabeth Prillaman Minter.
Mr. Minter was a member of the First Baptist Church, Starling Avenue, Martinsville, VA. He was a World War II veteran serving with the 9th Troop Carrier Squadron Army Air Corp., from October 1942 to November 1945, in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Minter started working for McKee Funeral Home in 1941 and continued to work as a licensed funeral director at Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory until the time of his death. He was appointed Justice of the Peace on January 1, 1956 and served in that capacity until July 1, 1974 at which time, the state of Virginia switched to the Magistrate System and he was named the first Chief Magistrate for the City of Martinsville, Henry and Patrick counties until his retirement on July 1, 1996. Mr. Minter was a charter member of the Martinsville/Henry County Life Saving Crew. He retired after 20 years as a life member. Also, he was a past member of the Collinsville Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Harris Minter of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Carol Swinney and R. A. Swinney of Martinsville, VA and Ann M. Marks and Jim M. Marks of Houston, TX; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim Minter and Sallie S. Minter of Danville, VA and Michael D. Minter and Tina T. Minter of Virginia Beach, VA; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a very special nephew, Page Minter of Yorktown, VA.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with Reverend John Fulcher officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at Norris Funeral Services and other times at the home.
