      Ernest Floyd Stophel, of 1801 Ridge Avenue, was called home to be with the Lord on October 28, 2006 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past year.
      A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006 at Reynolds Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Robert Hardy officiating.
      Interment will be in Dan View Cemetery in Eden.
      Mr. Stophel lived in Eden, N.C. and Cascade Va. and graduated from Draper High School in 1941.
      He was born on March 30, 1924, son of the late Edgar Charles Stophel and Mamie Moore Stophel.
      He served his country during World War II as a member of the 822nd Military Police Company in the European theater and formed a special bond with the other members of his company that has endured his lifetime.
      A builder by trade, he was dedicated and loyal to his family and the happiest when he was doing and giving for others.
      He had a heart of gold and will truly be missed and cherished by those who love him.
      He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church in Cascade, Va.
      He was preceded in death by one daughter Carol Stophel Bailey, three wives, Laura Minter Stophel, Lorene Akers Stophel, and Louise Stophel, one brother John Stophel and one grandson Matthew Stophel.
