  Notes	Rose's marital history is complicated - see Alfred WOODGATE's Notes. Before marrying Alfred in 1895 Rose had three illegitimate children. Thanks to Colin Stewart's research, we know the identity of the father of one of the children, almost certainly Archibald Rivers DOWNEY, born in 1889. The evidence is the following article from the Bury and Norwich Post of 10 September 1889, found by Colin at newspapers.com in February 2021: "MELFORD PETTY SESSIONS, September 6 BASTARDY - Rivers John Abraham was charged by Rose Florence Downey of Long Melford, with being the father of her illegitimate child. Mr Bates appeared for the defendant. Complainant's evidence went to show that the defendant had for almost two years spent Saturday and Sunday nights with her at home. The bench made an order against defendant for payment of 1s. 6d. a week for the child's maintenance." Death registered in Q2 1961, aged 95 as Rose DOWNEY.
