    Notes
    • December 2011, from Edward Scriven:
We again have the wonderful problem of either misspelling, miswriting, or just plain errors. [Mary's] 1st husband was William SPICHLEY, but he was buried in St. Clement's as "1767 PICHLEY, William, from St. Peter's, 40, Sep 25". His christening is recorded in St. Peter's in Sandwich as "1729 William, s of Willm SPICELY & Sarah, his wife, Jan. 5". (There is a marriage in St. Peter's on 2 October 1720 for William SPICELY and Sarah HOLLAND)."

William PICHLEY, SPICHLEY, or SPICELY and Mary had 7 children. Here briefly are the christenings and some burials with the various spellings from the actual records: (christenings are in St. Peter's and burials are in St. Clement's. I found this often in our family, so St. Clement's was either bigger or had some special meaning to the families.)

      1. John SPICHLEY chr. 6 September 1761 and buried 28 January 1762.
      2. William SPICHLEY, chr. 18 July 1762. No death information
      3. Daniel SPICHLEY, chr. 19 June 1763, buried 8 September 1763.
      4. Daniel SPICHLEY, chr. 24 June 1764, buried as Daniel PICHLEY on 7 December 1764.
      5. John PICHLEY, chr. 21 July 1765. No death information.
      6. Mary PICHLEY, chr. 21 September 1766, buried 18 October 1767.
      7. Benjamin PICHLEY, chr. 1 April 1768, buried 1 April 1769, aged 1.

I have to wonder if the parish clerk changed between June and December of 1764 as the Pichley spelling came up in Dec. of 1764 and continued from there.
For convenience I have used the SPICHLEY spelling for the surnames of the children in my records.

The marriage of William SPICHLEY and Mary WALLER took place in St. Clement's on 19 October 1760.

Mary was christened in St. Clement's 24 November 1731. She was buried in St. Clement's on 28 February 1821 as Mary Minter, Fisher's Street, age 90.

FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE WALLER LINE FROM EDWARD SCRIVEN

Mary Waller was the daughter of Benjamin Waller and Mary Hills. Benjamin and Mary were married in St. Peter's on 21 February 1731. I think I will send basics from here on out, and then you can tell me what details you want.

Mary Waller was the oldest of 4 children. Siblings were Benjamin Waller, chr. in St. Clement's 23 July 1735; John chr. 11 Feb 1739 and bur. 31 Dec. 1740 both in St. Clement's; and Elizabeth chr. 3 February 1745 and buried unmarried 14 April 1802, again all in St. Clement's. Benjamin married Elizabeth Ralph in Ash-next-Sandwich on 8 February 1760. They had 7 children. I don't know when Benjamin or Elizabeth died. Do you want the little bit that I have about their children?

Benjamin Waller, husband of Mary Hills, was christened 19 November 1704 in St. Clement's, son of John Waller and his wife Jane, although some have said the name was Elizabeth. I am not connected to the Waller line, so I have not pursued this. Benjamin was buried in St. Clement's 20 January 1780. Mary Hills was not baptized as a child, but she was baptized on 5 February 1731, just before marrying, in St. Peter's. She was buried in St. Clement's 2 June 1751.

Mary's parents were Andrew Hills and Anna Brothers. They had a total of 6 children.

Andrew Hills was the son of Andrew Hills and Jane Saffery, and they had 4 children total. Andrew remarried a Jane Ivers and had 3 more children. Anna Brothers was the daughter of Daniel Brothers and Anna Carter, and they had 8 children total. Daniel had been married to a Mary Moone, but she died soon after the marriage and had no children. I cannot go farther back on the Brothers or Carter families. Do you want names, dates, etc. on these people and their children? They do actually go into the direct line of the children of Laurence Minter (born 1750), so I can send you what I have, if wanted.

Andrew Hills, married to Jane Saffery, was the son of William Hills and Mercy Harris. I don't go farther back on the Saffery or Harris lines, but I can give marriage dates and burial dates on Jane and Mercy. William Hills and Mercy Harris had a total of 5 children.

William was the son of Steaphan Hylles. No mother listed. We have found 4 children for Steaphan. Steaphan's father was also a Steaphan Hylles, and he had 6 children. This is as far back as I can go, and this Steaphan was buried in St. Peter's, Sandwich, on 14 August 1597.

I have no problem sending you whatever information you want on these couples and their children, but as it goes farther back it is often very sketchy.

Let me know if you want all of what I have back to Steaphan, buried in 1597.
