Notes |
- 1881 census: aged 23, unmarried, captain's coxwain on HMS Dwarf.
When daughter Nora was baptised in 1884, William was a seaman of Emsworth, Hants.
1891 and 1901 censuses: In 1891, William's 3 children were lodged with the Palmer family in Portsmouth. Beside the childrens' names is written "Father abroad and mother in lunatic asylum". The whereabouts of William Henry and Julia in 1891 and 1901 hasn't been established but see below.
The following entries in ancestry.com's UK, Lunacy Patients Admission Registers, 1846-1912 probably refer to William's wife Julia:
Julia J Minter admitted to an institution in Portsmouth on 11 September 1890, discharged on 25 May 1891 as 'recovered'.
Julia J Minter admitted to an institution in Portsmouth on 27 September 1892, discharged on 7 April 1893 as 'Not Impd'.
I can't see any entries that might refer to William.
findmypast.co.uk has a copy of the 'Religious Creed Register' kept by Portsmouth Board Of Guardians. It shows that William & Julia's three children, all CofE, were admitted to the Portsmouth workhouse between 27 Sep 1892 and 17 Nov 1892.
