| Notes |
- Appears to have gone to South Africa. There is a record dating from 1846 in the National Archives of South Africa which refers to 'Motion. Insolvent estate of Thomas Leonard Minter'. A similar record refers to 'MINTER, THOMAS LEONARD. INSOLVENT LIQUIDATION AND DISTRIBUTION ACCOUNT.'
Another record from 1847 refers to 'RECORD OF PROCEEDINGS OF CRIMINAL CASE. CIRCUIT COURT, ALBANY. THE QUEEN VERSUS THOMAS LEONARD MINTER. THEFT.'
And in 1848: 'MEMORIALS RECEIVED. SOME INHABITANTS OF GRAHAMSTOWN ON BEHALF OF THOMAS LEONARD MINTER. REQUESTING THE LIFTING OF THE SENTENCE IMPOSED ON MINTER.'
In 1849: 'MEMORIALS RECEIVED. JOHN M MINTER. ENCLOSING LETTER TO BE FORWARDED TO HIS BROTHER.'
In 1850: 'MEMORIALS RECEIVED. JM MINTER. REGARDING HIS BROTHER'S CONDUCT.'
[John M Minter and JM Minter would have been John Moolenburg Minter]
There are indications that Thomas (as Thomas Leonard) married and had a family in South Africa. The details included here are speculative and need to be verified. In particular, the inclusion of John Hobday Minter as Thomas Leendert Minter's son is not supported by evidence of a birth certificate or baptismal record. The strongest supporting fact for making Thomas Wyatt Minter and John Hobday Minter brothers is that when John Hobday Minter's son Thomas Leonard was baptised in 1866 the witnesses were Thomas Wyatt Minter and Jane Agatha Minter. A record at NAAIRS in the Cape Town Archive Repository has the death of a Jane Agatha Minter in 1911.
July 2021: Erica Minter has found a UK National Archives document which records the death of Thomas L Minter on the (SS) Mauritius (ship's master Stewart). The death was caused by cholera and occurred off Scutari, Turkey on 12 November 1854. The record shows that a payment of £4 6s 4d was made on 3 March 1855 at Southampton but doesn't show to whom the payment was made.
At the time of Thomas's death the Crimean War was under way. Florence Nightingale and a team of 38 nurses arrived in Scutari on 4 November 1854. They had travelled from England, making the last part of the journey from Marseilles on the 'Vectis'.
