- Midshipman Norman Minter Patterson was one of the 833* crew members who lost their lives when HMS Royal Oak was sunk by German U-boat U-47 at Scapa Flow. The HMS Royal Oak Memorial is in St Magnus Cathedral, Broad Street, Kirkwall, Orkney. There is also a memorial plaque in St Ann's Church, Portsmouth.
