Arthur's son Alfred, writing to Cliff Minter in 1977, says that his father went to Australia in 1910, and then to New Zealand, where he married and where Alfred was born. Arthur and his wife returned to England in 1923, first to Horsham then to Deal, Kent. Due to the prevailing economic circumstances, Alfreda returned to New Zealand with her daughter in 1940 and Arthur and Alfred remained in England. The couple were never reunited before Arthur died in Upper Deal in 1952.
In 1919 Arthur sued for slander. The words complained of were "She must have got that man (meaning the plaintiff) to write it for her. Little she had to talk about anybody, living with that man (meaning the plaintiff) as she did, and giving anybody room to talk about her." The plaintiff alleged that the defendant meant thereby that the plaintiff was living in immoral relations with Mrs. Morris (his employer at the time), and was guilty of misconduct. In consequence of the words alleged to be used, the plaintiff lost his situation.
The defandant claimed a nonsuit on the ground that there was nothing to connect the dismissal with the alleged slander. His Honor upheld the nonsuit point.
A lengthy report of the case appeared in the Auckland Star on 23 September 1919 - see http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=AS19190923.2.40&srpos=703&e=-------50--661----0minter--
The case was also reported in the Wanganui Chronicle of 10 September 1919.
In 1922, Arthur found himself sued for libel. This was the result of a letter he'd written. He lost and had to pay $50 in damages. The case was reported in the Auckland Star on 27 July 1922 - see http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=AS19220727.2.88&srpos=705&e=-------50--661----0minter--
