Notes |
- From Rosemary Andrew, June 2010:
"Sir Alfred married Frances Bell b. 1857 and she died when my mother was four years old in 1892 of TB. The Bell family originated in Aylesbury and I have part of the family tree which includes Frances known as Fannie. It starts with Joseph Bell 1672-1739 who was Commissioner and High Sheriff of the County of Buckinghamshire then William Bell, Thomas Bell and William Bell who apparently did nothing in particular, then Joseph Bell 1823-1899. From Then onwards all the Bell men were engineers and Joseph Bell was Fanny Cadman's father. He must have lived in NZ although not mentioned as doing so. Frank Bell his son had two children Frank Hamilton Bell and Rosalinda Bell and Frank had four children one of whom was Francis Robert Bell b.1911 who worked for a large car firm in England and invented a gas turbine engine for cars. It was on the news in the cinemas in the 1940s and I have a newspaper cutting about it. Probably explains why Alfred Minter's degree was in Mining Engineering. I was told that he had an IQ of 149.I know he passed his University Entrance exam at age 16 and had to wait 2 years before he could attend University.
Jerome Cadman 1816-1879 married Anne Hildyard at St Clement Danes Church, The Strand London and went 1st of all to Oz in 1841 and then to NZ in 1850 when Sir Alfred was 3. They settled on the Coromandel Peninsular and owned Saw Mills. Jerome Cadman then moved to Auckland where he and his wife were very active in church and local government affairs. Alfred Jerome Cadman became member of parliament for Coromandel and I have photos of the original home there and he later built a very large house in Auckland. His sister my great aunt Eliza McShane (nee Cadman) had 7 daughters and when she was widowed, she lived in the Auckland house and brought up my mother and uncle Francis. I have a photo of the house with mother standing on the veranda and uncle Francis sitting in an extremely primitive car.
Sir Alfred Cadman KCMG, Knight Commander of St Michael and St George was Minister for Railways, Native Minister, (before they had their own) Minister for Mines, Member of NZ Legislative Council and other duties which I am not familiar with. He took my mother aged 15 years with him to London in 1902 as he was to attend the coronation of Edward V11 by invitation. I have a photo of him in full court dress complete with sword when he attended this event on August 12th 1902. He died in Auckland on 23rd March 1905 age 57 years. He was taken by sea from Auckland to Corormandel where the burial service was held. Many Auckland people went on the ship to Coromandel to attend the service.
I have several pages copied from a book written in NZ called '150 years in New Zealand' which my son Christopher sent me which covers the Cadman family and their relatives. "
