An article headed HOW ELECTIONS ARE CONDUCTED IN ENGLAND appeared in the New Zealand Tuapeka Times on 22 December 1880. It reported on official enquiries into election regularities in several English constituencies including Sandwich, Kent. The article carried the following statement:
"Nearly, if not all, the publicans seem to have been " squared." Mr W. R. Minter, of the Drum, at Walmer, said he had received L 129 for voters, and had paid L2l to sandwich boys for carrying boards. "
