      HANDY

Last Saturday just before noon, as the old year began to wane, death claimed Mr. George Handy, aged seventy, one of the most prominent men in the community, who had been a sufferer for several years. The funeral services were held on the afternoon of New Year's Day at the Assembly Presbyterian church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. V. P. Yeaman. The service was touching and impressive in its dignified simplicity, and after it the burial was in Spring Hill cemetery. Mr. Handy was a native of this county, coming of one of the state's representative families, and he had always been identified with the best interests of his native place. He was a man of strict integrity, full of charity and kindliness, and a courteous and hospitable host at "Adair Place," his handsome country home. Perhaps no man in the county was wider read or broader of intellect, nor possessed of a more able and forceful pen when he chose to write. During the Civil War his sympathies were with the confederacy and he enlisted and fought as a member of Morgan's command. All through the war
he carried a little testament given him by his sister when he was eight years old, and the worn little volume, which he had always treasured, was buried with him at his request. No man held his friendships truer or firmer and many will sorrow over his going away, although it meant rest after his months of suffering. The sympathy of the entire community goes out (to) the beloved wife, who was Miss Mary McGaughey, of Indianapolis, and his daughter, Mrs. W. W. Ensminger.
