    Notes
    • Service records related to Army Pension claims are on ancestry.com. They show that Stephen served twice in the Yorkshire Regiment.

Stephen first joined the army on 30 October 1893 at the age of 18 years 2 months, a sawyer of Camberwell. He originally signed on for 7 years but extended this to 12 years and then to 21 years in 1904. He was made a Lance Corporal in 1906 but reverted (for misconduct) to Private in 1908. He was discharged at his own request on 13 February 1914 after 20 years 107 days service. During his time Stephen served in Burmah, India (10 years) and South Africa (where he married). His next of kin was noted as his mother Caroline Minter of 47 Stockwell Street, Camberwell, London SE. He received a life pension.

Stephen, aged 35, born Camberwell, and Emily, aged 37, married 2 years, no children, born Warwick, appear in the 1911 census living at the Infantry Barracks, Fulford Road, York. Stephen was a Private in the 2nd Bn, Alexandra Princess of Wales Yorkshire Regiment, his trade was carpenter. Emily had with her Mary Minter, aged 14 born Antrim, Belfast resident: Mary was noted as being 'step-daughter' but nothing else about her has been found.
In the same Barracks was Stephen's brother Richard, 25 who was also a Private in the 2nd Bn, Alexandra Princess of Wales Yorkshire Regiment.

Stephen enlisted again at the age of nearly 39, a carpenter born in Camberwell, on 25 August 1914 as a Private but was appointed as a Lance Corporal two days later and promoted to Corporal in November then to Sergeant on 1 March 1915. He was discharged as no longer fit for war service on 22 October 1917 with dilation of bronchi having served 3 years 59 days. He was in the Mediterranean (Galipoli and Egypt) from July 1915 to July 1916 and then in France until August 1918. At the time of his discharge Stephen gave his address as 13 Ashburn Place, Cromwell Road, South Kensington, London.
Stephen's medical condition was assessed in October 1917 to be the 'result of active service, exposure & hardships'. He was awarded a pension then a constant attendance allowance and it's noted that he entered St Joseph Nursing Home on 9 October 1918, by which time he had TB.
Stephen's next of kin were wife Emily of 84 Monument Road, Peckham, London and brother Frederick of the same address. Emily was Emily Jane McKeown. They married in Wynberg, South Africa on 26 August 1908. No children are listed.
The death registration in Q4 1918 at Hackney RD almost certainly relates to Stephen. It's not apparent what became of his widow.
