    Notes
    • According to the Rochford parish register, Edward's father and mother had two sons baptised as Edward, the first on 14 May 1820, the second on 26 December 1824 which was coincidentally the date on which a sister, Sarah, was baptised. As the information below shows, the age of the Edward found in censuses varies. I can't help thinking that for some reason Edward was baptised twice and am therefore taking his birth as 'before 14 May 1820', the date of the first baptism. 1820 would be consistent with the age stated for Edward in the 1851 census.

In all probablity Edward married Catherine LYNCH in 1842 in Paddington.

The following 1851 census entry, although ostensibly for Henry Minter, clearly relates to Edward:
1851 census: at 31 Stanwell Street, Clerkenwell, London, Henry (31, hawker, born Middlesex (sic)), Catharine (34, born Ireland), Susan (6, born Middlesex) and Edward (1 born Middlesex).

A lot of searching turned up the following 1861 census entry which is indexed by ancestry under MENTO and the surname is entered as MINTO. It is very difficult to understand why Edward's wife is shown as Ann. Despite this, the entry appears relevant.

1861 census: at 10 Cooper's Buildings, St Pancras (which is in the same census sub-district, Grays or Grays Inn Lane, as Brunswick Grove), (all surnames MINTO), Edward (head, 45, fishmonger, born Rotchford (sic), Essex), Ann (wife, 48, born Ireland), Susan (daughter, 17, head dress maker, born Clerkenwell, Middlesex), Edward (son, 10, scholar, born Clerkenwell, Middlesex) and George (son, 8, scholar, born Clerkenwell, Middlesex).

No trace of the registration of the 3 children *. But George appears to have been baptised (as MENTOR) on 30 May 1852 - parents Edward (costermonger) and Catherine, of Turnmill Street.
The following 1871 census entry appears definitely to refer to Edward and Catherine:

1871 census: at 18 Brunswick Grove, St Pancras, Edward (head, 55, hawker, born
Rochester (sic), Essex), Catharine (wife, 60, born Tipperary, Ireland), Edward (son, 21, porter unemployed, born London, Middlesex) and George (son, 17, porter unemployed, born London, Middlesex).

Extensive searching has failed to reveal a census entry for 1841.

      * October 2009: three more children have been found
      - Sarah, whose birth (and death) was registered. At the time of the baptism, the address was 4 Ann Street and father's occupation was porter. At burial, address was Turnmill Street, Clerkenwell.
      - George, whose death was registered in Q3 1848 and who was buried aged 1 on 28 July that year. But unless his birth was registered outside London there is no sign of it. At burial, address was Turnmill Street, Clerkenwell.
      - Harriet Ann, whose death was registered in Q4 1855 and was buried age 1 month on 7 January 1856, as of Old Woolwich Road, Clerkenwell. No trace of birth registration (the Harriet Minter registered in Q4 1855 was the daughter of another family). Later (December 2011): it now appears that Harriet Ann was the daughter of Henry & Catherine (nee Clinker) Minter of the Lambeth group. So she has been deleted from Edward's list of children.
