    • November 2012, from Sue Baucum:

I am writing to add an extra item of information for one of Sally Maria Minter's children (spouse Robert Mayall). You might recall their son Charles Mayall chr 15 Nov 1818, St Mary at Lambeth. Also in the 1851 census the mysterious grandson Charles b. "West Indies", living with Sally Maria and Robert Mayall.

Following leads for this grandson led to a Charles Mayall, 19, who enrolled in the Army 1859 in Litchurch. His first escapade was to Athlone. Interestingly in one of the census records for this Charles gave his birthplace as Athlone and date Dec 1841 (in other records it was variously England or East India) but the family is correct (wife, kids) in the other records and it's possible he didnt actually know. He was discharged from the army in 1879 (medical description "Worn Out" - he had been treated for several bouts of malaria) and in the discharge papers is given an address in Macclesfield, very close to streets where Mayalls lived in various census records and to where Sally Maria Minter died (all places within about a 1 mile radius). He worked for a year or two at the railroad works in Crewe (moved to Coppenhall) then took off for St John's New Brunswick (he had been stationed there) and back-and-forthed across the Atlantic a few times. Anyway, all that is getting irrelevant since you're greater concern is the 1st-gen Minter descendant, the Charles Mayall chr 1818. So, since Charles the younger gave a birthplace Athlone, I set about looking in Ireland for a marriage record, lo and behold:

      St John's, Limerick, Ireland

      MAYALL Charles (Soldier 20th Regt)
      WARBURTON Elizabeth

I've attached the extracted record, nothing more is known. Warburtons were definitely in and around Limerick at the time, but I have no further information on Elizabeth (though I think she is definitely English). Anyway, I have found no discharge papers for this Charles (chr 1818) which implies that he may have died in service, which further implies he and Elizabeth may have died in India (records were kept for pension purposes for discharged soldiers but for those who died records were destroyed after 15 yrs at this time period). The regiment he was with served in Bermuda and India, and also operated out of St Johns, NB, being yet more circumstantial evidence for the younger Charles's attraction to NB after his discharge (and the younger Charles also married a local girl there).

It turns out that these Mayalls, including cousin lines, had a record of joining up (some, though not the two Charles's, seemed to have a habit of becoming quartermasters as early as the 1770s in the US, and a more recent one being my grandfather who was a quartermaster in WW1, North Africa).

So there is no proof that this Charles who m. Elizabeth Warburton in Limerick is definitely the Charles who was son of Sally Maria Minter and Robert Mayall but all the evidence points that way. Until more records surface this is probably all that can be done. I have looked very hard for India campaign Mayalls and found none, maybe they will surface in the future.
