    Notes
    • Details of this family have been supplied by Jon Cochrane, February 2011.

It's not known whether the following refers to this person:
From the Manawatu Times, 17 July 1883.
Dunedin Supreme Court, per Press Association. Dunedin, July 16
The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court ended today, when George W Minter, for embezzlement from the New Zealand Insurance Company, was found guilty and sentenced to two years. This is the second trial this session, the first jury having disagreed, and last session he was acquitted on a similar charge.

The original press cutting is at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz

Another cutting at the same source reports that a G W Minter was charged on 19 February 1896 that on 5 February he rode a bicycle along the footpath... He was fined £1, cost 7 shillings.

Another cutting, dealing with a case known as 'The Mysterious Spirit of "Michael Dolan"' comes from NZ Truth, 15 December 1917. George William Minter appeared as a witness:
"George William Minter, merchant and prominent Spiritualist, said he had had a reading off Page, and firmly believed in him. Witness appeared to be an authority on mediums, and, indeed, informed the court that he was a medium in a private way himself."

A Geo W Minter appeared as a witness in an earlier case involving an assault. This was reported in the Wellington Evening Post on 24 September 1900. His evidence appears as:
"Geo. W. Minter deposed that as he was passing the corner of Old Customhouse-street and Farish-street he saw by the light of an electric lamp two men dragging a third. When he went to investigate he found Coker lying in the road, the others having disappeared. Coker was bruised about the face, and a piece of broken watch-chain was hanging trom his waistcoat."

The Evening Post, Wellington, reported on 11 October 1917 that G W Minter had subscribed for 50 shares in the newly established British Petroleum Development Company Ltd.

NZ Truth, 30 November 1918, had a caricature of "George William Minter (A Wellington Merchant)" accompanied by a verse:
      He never growls nor grumbles,
      At prices ne'er does fuss;
For he knows high prices aye are good,
For the bloke who acts the shrewd,
      And wears a circumbendibus.

An obituary appeared in the Auckland Star on 28 November 1929:
MR. G. W. MINTER. The death of Mr. G. W. Minter in Wellington at the age of 77 years removed a man generally known in business circles. He was born in New South Wales and came to New Zealand as a lad to join his uncle on a station in Otago. Later he entered the employ of the Bank of New Zealand and subsequently rose to be a branch manager. Mr. Minter next went into business on his own account, and at various times managed different firms. He was interested in the search for gold and petroleum in New Zealand. Mrs. Minter survives her husband. There are two daughters.
