    Notes
    • Although his age, as given in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, suggested a birth in 1834 or 1835, the marriage in 1869 appears to be William's, even though his age is shown as 31. Age discrepancies also occur in the census entries which follow:

1871 England Census: at 13 Wellington Street, Birmingham (all WHEWAY), William (head, 34, jeweller (pensioner), born Nuneaton), Emma Mary (wife, 33, born London) and Ada (daughter, 8, born Birmingham).
Note: the identity of 8 year-old Ada is a mystery. Her age suggests she was born well before William and Emma married. She doesn't appear in the 1881 census, by which time ther's another Ada in the house.

When daughter Eliza was baptised (privately) in August 1872, address was shown as 95 Grosvenor Street, occupation optician.
When daughters May and Rose baptised in January 1878, address was shown as Brearley Street, occupation steel pen polisher.

1881 England Census: at 25 Ct 1 house, Brearley Street West, Birmingham (all WHEWAY, all born Birmingham), William (head, 43, steel pen polisher, born Birmingham), Emma (wife, 42), George H (son, 6 months), Ada (daughter, 10, scholar), Mary (daughter, 5, scholar) and Rose (daughter, 3).

1891 England Census: at 117 Tower Street, Birmingham (all WHEWAY except Ada, all born Birmingham except Emma), William (head, 54, bicycle saddle fitter, born Birmingham), Emma M A (wife, 53, steel pen stamper, born London), Ada REID (daughter, married, 30, electro plate worker), May (daughter, 15, steel pen stamper), Rose (daughter, 13, press worker) and George H (son, 10, scholar).

1901 England Census: at No 3 back Tower Street, Birmingham (all WHEWAY), Emma (head, widow, 61, born London), Rose (daughter, 23, press worker) and George (son, 20, shaker).

1911 England Census: at 2 court 9 Moland Street, Birmingham (3 rooms) (both WHEWAY), Emma Mary (head, widow, 72, married 43 years, 7 children all living, born London) and George (son, 30, diper, bedstead works).
