* Sally Bruce writes:
Hancock 1824 and wife, Ann, nee Lake, were tenants in part of an old house in Friar Yard off Friar Lane (site of Collins Almshouse) for over 30 years. In the 1861 Census, it was called the Friary and later census refer to the property as 4/6 Friar Yard. I have a reference to "Mr Hancock" in a 1894 newspaper article where he talks about the interior of the house. Apparently, it contained traces of its past when it had been a Carmelite Friary from 1271 to 1539. A house was built on the remains of the friary and owned by the same family who owned Haddon Hall in Derbyshire. Dorothy Vernon, of that family, occasionally lived there with her husband, John Manners. Sadly, the house was demolished in 1927 for road-widening (this information is from the internet)."
census: at 4 & 6 Friary Yard, St Nicholas, Nottinghamshire (all HANCOCK), Samuel (head, 67, silk merchant, born Nottingham), Ann (wife, 66, born Nottingham), Catherine M (daughter, 29, music teacher, born Nottingham). Also two grandsons, Rambran (?) H (13, born London) and Arthur W (1 or 11, born Singapore).
According to Sally Bruce, April 2015:
" two grandsons, living with their grandparents, Samuel and Ann were Auberon Harold Hancock born London 1878 and Arthur T. Hancock born 1880 in Singapore (seen it referred to as "Straits Settlement, Singapore") so Arthur would be 11. The boy's parents were Samuel Hancock 1850 and Eliza Brown. They had 2 other children: Winifred born 1882 in Singapore and Frederick 1887 in Bardsey, Lincs (Eliza's birthplace). The 1901 census shows this family all together in Nottingham. "
1901 census: at 2 Radcliffe Street, Nottingham (all HANCOCK), Samuel (head, 77, accountant, own account, born Hyson Green, Notts), Ann (wife, 76, born Hyson Green, Notts), Catherine M (daughter, 39, music teacher, own account, born Nottingham). Also a servant Frances M DRING (19).
