    Notes
    • Details about Richard ELLISON were provided in April 2016 by John J Minter of Preston.

Richard was baptised the son of William Ellison and Ann Starkey. He became a handloom and power-loom weaver, in linen. He married in 1832 in Barnsley and later on moved to Leeds, where he died in 1883.

1841 census: in Town End, Barnsley (all ELLISON), Richd. (30, linen weaver), Ellen (25), Elizabeth (8), William (5), John (3) and George (1).

1851 census: in Dodworth, Old Road, Grimsby Cottage, Barnsley (all ELLISON), Richard (head, 39, power loom weaver, born Barnsley), Helen (wife, 39, born Lanc, Flixton), Elizabeth (daughter, 18, winder at factory), William (son, 16, weaver, born Worford(?)), George (son, 8, born Barnsley), Sarah Ann (daughter, 6, birthplace obliterated) and Mary (daughter, 9 months, birthplace obliterated).

A 1 year-old Mary Ellison was buried at St George, Barnsley on 27 August 1851, probably Richard & Eleanor's daughter.

1861 census: in Rose Common Road, Barnsley (all ELLISON), Richard (head, 49, linen dresser and weaver, born Barnsley), Eleanor (wife, 49, born Flixton, Lancashire), George (son, 19, linen weaver, born Barnsley) and Sarah Ann (daughter, 17, linen weaver, born Barnsley).

1871 census: at 58 Millwright Street, Leeds, Yorkshire (both ELLISON), Richard (head, 59, jobber in linen mill, born Barnsley) and Eleanor (wife, 59, born Flixton, Lancashire).

Richard's 1872 marriage certificate shows his occupation as book-keeper. Full details of the marriage certificate are in the Marriage Notes. Richard's wife's death certificate also mentions 'book-keeper' as her husband's occupation. John J Minter comments (April 2016) "I do have a note somewhere that Richard was a weaver - AND, at some stage - a line warehouseman. Warehousemen had to keep a record of their stock - so perhaps he kept books/records after all." John J Minter evidences Richard Ellison's job as a warehouseman - he's shown as such in the record of the baptism on 14 June 1833 of daughter Elizabeth.

Following Eleanor's death in 1871, Richard married again and appeared with his new wife in the 1881 census: at 5 Time Street, Leeds, Yorkshire (both ELLISON), Richard (head, 69, hand loom weaver, born Barnsley) and Elizabeth (wife, 71, born Boston, Yorkshire).

Richard died in 1883: at his burial he was described as a weaver, aged 72. Elizabeth died a few years later.
