    Notes
    • Translation of birth certificate provided by Jackie Lefranc, November 2011:

On this day 9th November 1852 at 1.15 p.m, Henry Teetgen MINTER 36, hotelier in this town, 2 rue de la Flotille came before us the undersigned, deputy mayor of Boulogne sur mer to declare his wife Catherine GREENFIELD 33, gave birth to a male child today at 3 a.m at their home and they wish to name him EDMUND.

The said declaration and presentation of the child was witnessed by the father's friends Robert LYLE 23, of independant means and Francois BARBERY 42, hotelier and both residents of this town. After the reading the father and witnesses signed the declaration.

Joseph Edmund's two first names seem to have been interchangeable. He was born in France and the birth certificate (see above) says just Edmund.

The only census entry found is for 1881: he appeared as Edmund Joseph and this is the name that appears on his marriage certificate. However, several instances of Joseph Edmund appear in Australian records.

It's not clear whether Joseph went to Australia with his parents in 1862. If he did, he must have returned to England - he married in Islington, Middlesex in 1876 and he and his wife had children in England up to 1884. But their last known child was born in Australia in 1887.

proarchives.imagineering.com.au has the following in its 'Index to Unassisted Passenger Lists for British, Foreign and New Zealand Ports 1852 - 1923':
      on the 'Liguria' arriving Sept 1887, Joseph E Minter (34), Emily Minter (40), Eugenie (33), Kate E (5), John P (3), Maud (7), Augustus (11), Ernest E (9). Eugenie would have been Joseph's sister.

On Joseph's marriage certificate, his father is shown as Henry Minter, hotel keeper. '(deceased)' is written below Henry Minter's name and above Joseph's wife's father's name. Is it possible that Joseph didn't know his father was still alive?

1881 census: at 61 Auckland Road, Bethal Green, London, Ed. (29, dock labourer, born France (British Subject)), Emily (32, born London), Augustine (4, scholar, born London), Ernest (3, born London), Maud (11 months, born London), Susannah (aunt, widow, 80, annuitant, born Folkestone, infirm) and Clara (aunt, 15, miliner, born London). The identity of Susannah and Clara hasn't been established.

Joseph was a witness at Young, Australia on 12 January 1890.
