    Notes
    • Joseph's father may have been the Joseph HAWKINS who was buried in Great Horkesley on 26 February 1745/6. His grandfather may have been the John HAWKINS buried in Great Horkesley on 18 May 1699.

Joseph may have had a brother, Edward. Edward Hawkins 'of Wakes Colne' married Mary NEWMAN (or possibly HARMAN) of Great Horkesley in Great Horkesley on 10 September 1717.
Joseph may also have had a sister, Mary. Mary Hawkins and Thomas LAW (?) married in Great Horkesley on 21 September 1709. Both of Great Horkesley, by banns.

The Will dated 8 May 1738 and the burial of a Joseph Hawkins in 1738 almost certainly relate to this Joseph but it hasn't been proved conclusively.

The Will of 8 May 1738 was made by Joseph Hawkins of Great Horkesley, victualler. He mentions his "freehold messuage with the appurtenances called the White Horse in Great Horkesley" but it's unclear whether this was a reference to a public house or to a private residence. I can't find any reference on the web to a pub called the White Horse but there was and is still a large house of that name in Great Horkesley.
The Will mentions Joseph's wife Anne and three sons, Joseph, John and Allen

    • Ann's name is difficult to read from the parish register but looks like NEWMAN. Joseph and Ann were married by banns, both of Great Horkesley.

October 2013: on closer inspection the PR entry for Ann looks like MERCHANT so I've changed my record.
