    Notes
    • Ancestry.com has some service records, in connection with a WW1 disability pension claim, which although the middle name 'Lowes' is never mentioned almost certainly refer to Henry Lowes Minter.

When he joined the East Kent Regiment on 21 November 1894, Henry (or Harry as he was occasionally referred to) gave his age as 18 years 2 months, a laborer. This would equate to his birth occurring about September 1876: Henry Lowes Minter was born on 8 September 1878. However, another document in the set gives Henry's next-of-kin as his mother Elizabeth Parks of Old Rustingford Lane, Canterbury, his sister Elizabeth, same address, his brother Ernest, serving in "The Buffs", and his wife A Minter of 104 Cheriton Road, Folkestone. These names appear to confirm that the records belong to Henry Lowes Minter and the address of Mrs A Minter agrees with that appearing on Henry's marriage certificate for Henry's wife.

Henry left the army with 19 years 122 days service on 22 March 1914 having served in India, Burma, Aden, South Africa, Honk Kong and Singapore. He was awarded the India Medal. When he was discharged he said he intended to live at 119 Marsalla Road, Lewisham.

The record gives details of Henry's 1906 marriage and four children who were born overseas.

The only thing which is doubtful about the above is the discrepancy between Henry's age when he joined the army (18) and his birth registration in Q4 1878. The Henry who married in September 1906 said he was 30 which would also suggest a birth year of 1876. Henry might have lied about his age when he joined the army but why would he continue the lie when he married? When his death was registered in Q2 1955 (as Henry L Minter), his age was stated to be 78 implying he was born in 1876 or 1877. The service record shows that Henry was in England between 9 December 1904 and 26 September 1906.

Henry was clearly an army man. He re-enlisted with the same regiment on 15 October 1914, aged 38 years 1 day, occupation conductor, but was discharged on 4 March 1915 'not likely to become a soldier' (!) Next of kin Agnes Minter, 38 Richmond Street, Cheriton.

Henry enlisted for a third time on 9 May 1919 this time with the Royal Enginners, giving his age as 42 years 244 days, his address as 27 Bevan Road, Bostall (?) Estate, Plumstead and his occupation as cook. He was demobbed as a sapper on 26 April 1920 giving his address as 27 Bevan Road, Boston Hill, Plumstead. He was in France between 15 July 1919 and 2 March 1920. Next of kin wife Agnes Annie of 27 Bevan Road, Bostall Hill Estate, Plumstead; also lists sons Ernest, Victor Henry, Bertie Sidney and George and daughters Kathleen and Mariah Eileen.

1911 census: Henry's family was counted at B Company of The Buffs at Singapore SS, Annie Agnes (wife, 30, married 3 years, 2 children both living, born Carshalton, Surrey), Kathleen Louisa (daughter, 2, born Harrismith, O R Colony) and Victor Henry (son, 1 month, born Hong Kong, S China). Henry Lowes Minter not found.

When daughter Nora Florence was baptised in India, Henry was a Private in the 2nd Bn, The Buffs.
