      "A GRAND OLD MAN"
TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MR. W. MINTER
A grand old man who radiated happiness and goodwill was the tribute paid to the late Mr. Wm. Minter, of 2, Madeira-road, Margate, at the funeral service held at Holy Trinity Church, Margate, on Saturday morning.
Mr. Minter, who was for thirty-three years collector of taxes in Margate and an ardent chess player, died at Canterbury the previous Wednesday in his eighty-eighth year. The service was conducted by the Vicar (the Rev. J. B. Cowell) and included the hymn, " For all Thy Saints, 0 Lord," the twenty-third Psalm, and the reading of a passage from the Wisdom of Solomon. The organist (Mr F Wake) played "Hear my Prayer " (Mendelssohn) and "O rest in the Lord " (Mendelssohn). Paying tribute to Mr. Minter, the Vicar said they had come there to salute and give thanks for a noble life. It should be a service of praise and thanksgiving, for William Minter had gone triumphantly to his rest. No words of his could do justice to the tribute which those present and many others unable to be present would like to pay to such a grand old man. He could only speak from slender experience, but he knew that throughout his long life, whether as a public servant, as a husband or father, or as a friend, he endeared himself to all who met him or knew him. He radiated happiness and goodwill. That church was very dear to him, and he worshipped there very regularly for a great many vears. Its work and life and interests were ever his. He (the Vicar) supposed that in his contact with the church laid the secret of his joyous personality.
Mourners present were : Mrs. Morphy, Mrs. Atkins, Mrs. Bellerby and Mrs. Hook (daughters), Mr. F. Hook (son-in-law), Miss Bellerby and Mrs. H. C. Doughty (granddaughters), Mr. Edward Minter (brother), Miss Murton (niece), Mr. John Rolle (nephew), and Mrs. Duss-Baker.
Among others in the church were the Mayor (Councillor F. J. Cornford), Alderman F. L,. Pettman, J .P., C.C. and Mrs. Pettman, Councillor H. G. Pedder, Mr. and Mrs. A. Hodges, Mr. G. C. Golder, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Doughty, Mr. B. J. Garraway, ].P., Mr. N. V. Morgan, Mr. F. Bywater., Mr. H. Waters, Mr. W. L. Langston, Mrs. M. Venner, Mr. A. J. Vicary, Mrs Griffiths, Mr. Pyle, Mrs. Murton and Mr. R. McConnell, Mr. C. Murton and Mr. W. J. Withers (representing the Inland Revenue Department).
The interment followed at Margate Cemetery.

The Advertiser & Echo (Kent) of 12 Jan 1943 carried a brief report of William's death which noted his lifetime hobby of chess. He was a pioneer of Margate Chess Club and brought many famous players to the town to take part in open chess tournaments.
