    Notes
    • Baptised as John William son of William John & Mary Martha Minter, John Street, greengrocer.

January 2010. There is a case to be made for treating William John Minter as the same person as the John William Minter who appears in the 'Lambeth Minters' as the son of William John Minter and Mary Martha Gardener. The London baptism found in the London Metropolitan Archive at Ancestry.co.uk which has been assumed to relate to John William Minter took place on 12 October 1845 at St Mary Lambeth. The date fits equally well with William John Minter's birth, which successive censuses suggested was 1845 or 1846.
However, William John Minter consistently gave his birthplace as Westminster, which is on the north side of the Thames, whereas Lambeth is on the south side. Therefore, the two individuals will remain distinct until further evidence that they are the same arises.
December 2011. Since the above was written the following 1851 census entry has been found:
at 1 Robert Street, Lambeth, Mary MINTER (lodger, widow, 28, charwoman, born St Giles in the Fields), John William [no surname or relationship stated but is on the next line to Mary], 5, born Westminster, George GARDNER (brother, single, 19, bricklayer, born St Giles) and Jane GARDNER (sister, single, 16, servant, born Lambeth).
Living at the same address but as a separate household were:
Thomas GARDNER (56, bricklayer, born St Mary Le Strand) Jane GARDNER (wife, 49, born Shoreditch), Edward GARDNER (son, 13, born Lambeth), Elizabeth GARDNER (daughter, 10, born Lambeth) and Emma GARDNER (daughter, 14, born Lambeth).
The following 1861 census entry has also been found:
at 5 Mary Place, Chapel Street, Woolwich, London, George CAWTE (37, labourer), Mary CAWTE (38, born St Pancras, Middlesex), John MINTER (15, born Westminster), George CAWTE (8, born Charlton, Kent), Robert CAWTE (5, born Woolwich, Kent), Thomas CAWTE (2, born Woolwich, Kent) and Ester (sic) CAWTE (8 months, born Woolwich, Kent).
It has also been realised that one of the witnesses at William John's 1863 marriage was a Mary GARDNER (although the identity of this Mary Gardner hasn't been established).
In view of the above, the Westminster group has been merged into the Lambeth group.

1871 census: William not found; his wife Emily (27, dressmaker) and daughter Rose (2) were living with Emily's parents at 5 Preston Street, Kentish Town, London.
Emily Minter, born in 1866, doesn't appear in the 1871 census but I can't find a death for her.

1881 census (indexed as MISOLES by ancestry.com): at 15 Lower Chester Street, Greenwich, London, William J (35, general labourer, born Westminster), Emily (wife, 37, born Marylebone), Rose (daughter, 12, born St Pancras) and Lilly (daughter, 7, born St Pancras).

When son Alfred was baptised in 1882, William & Emily were at 9 Cromwell Terrace, Pelton Road, William a labourer.

1891 census: at 2 Fenton Street, Greenwich, William J (45, general labourer), Emily (46), Lilly (17, general servant), Alfred (8, scholar) and Henry (5, scholar). Rose not found.

1901 census: at 2 Fenton Street, Greenwich, Wm J (55, labourer, soap works), Emily (57), Lily (27, laundress) and Alfred (18, labourer). Daughter Rose (32) was a patient in the Greenwich Union Infirmary.

1911 census: at 73d, Collerston Road, East Greenwich, London SE (2 rooms), William John (head, 65, married, soap boiler, soap works, worker, born Westminster, London), Lilly (wife *, 38, married 5 years, 1 child, living, born Kentish Town, London) and William Charles (son, 3, born Deptford, London)
      Form signed William John Minter.
      * there is no sign of a marriage registration around 1906 and (as at January 2010) no marriage in the London Matropolitan Archive at Ancestry.co.uk. So William and Lilly may not have married. Thanks to Peter Hunt, Lilly's surname, Williams, has emerged - it's on William Charles's birth index record (extened version at the GRO).
