    Notes
    • It's possible that Charles's marriage to Mary broke down in the late 1880s. The following 1891 census appears to refer to Charles but he is noted as being a widower. No death registration for a Mary Ann Duck has been found for the period of a few years before 1891 and it's worth noting that at the time of the census Charles had a boarder named Emily Wirhus(?), aged 31, born Heigham, Norwich. This is almost certainly the woman who appears with Charles in the 1901 census as his wife. But there's no sign of a corresponding marriage. It's also worth noting that in 1911, a Mary Ann Duck, aged 54, single, born Hackney was living with her niece Jessie POWERS (37, single, born Aston, Birmingham) in New Malden. Jessie Selina A POWERS was the daughter of Alfred POWERS of Birmingham, who married Emma Lucy DUCK on 2 May 1872 at St Mary Lambeth. Emma's father was William DUCK. The exact relationship between Jessie POWERS and Mary Ann DUCK hasn't been worked out.

1891 census: in Rectory Cottage, Mile End Old Town, London, Charles J DUCK (widower, 49, publican, born Plaistow, Essex), Charles J DUCK (son, 9, scholar, born Poplar, London), Daisy DUCK (daughter, 7, scholar, born Poplar, London), Frank DUCK (son, 4, scholar, born Bromley-Bow, London) and Emily WIRHUS(?) (boarder, single, 31, living on means, born Heigham, Norwich).

1901 census: 35 Victoria Road, Stoke Newington, London, Charles J DUCK (59, house agents clerk, born Plaistow, Essex), Emily DUCK (wife, 42, born Norwich, Norfolk), Daisy K DUCK (daughter, 17, servant domestic, born Poplar, London) and Frank DUCK (son, 14, servant domestic, born Poplar, London) and two boarders.
