Jack enlisted into the Labour Corps at Canterbury on 6 November 1915. His age was then 22 years 49 days. His birthplace was given as Herne Bay and an address is noted, 9 North Street, Herne Bay. He was disembodied (discharged) as a sergeant on 21 February 1920 and spent some time in France and Flanders. He applied for a pension on grounds of general debility (loss of weight) but was rejected after a medical examination condaucted on 24 January 1920 in Noyelles sur Mer found nil disability.
Before joining the army Jack worked for Chas. Bennett, fishmonger of Herne Bay.
