      1891 census: Thomas was a gunner in the Royal Artillery based at the South Shoebury School of Gunnery.

      Thomas was awarded the King's South Africa Medal in 1902. He was a gunner, no. 74662, in the H/H Section Pompoms Royal Regiment of Artilley. He came home from South Africa on the Kildonan Castle on 23 July 1902.
