    Notes
    • Nora and her brother and sister appear to have had a traumatic childhood. In 1891 they were living with the Palmer family in Portsmouth. The census says 'father abroad and mother in lunatic asylum'. In 1901 William and Ada were staying with their aunt Georgina in Ramsgate; Nora was by then a servant in St Lawrence, Thanet. At the time the childrens' father William Henry married Julia Coster he was a seaman in the Royal Navy, which may explain why he was abroad in 1891. He probably died in 1895, aged 36. There is no trace in the 1891 or 1901 census of Julia but she may have died, aged 60, in 1910.

Feb 2011. Nora has been found in a list of the inmates of the Royal British Female Orphan Asylum at Devonport in July 1895, transcribed from a document in the National Archives collection. The list can be viewed at www.plymouthdata.info/Orphanages-Royal British-Inmates 1895.htm. The list says that Nora's father when she was admitted was a Warrant Officer in the Royal Navy.
