    Notes
    • 1910 United States Federal Census: in Catalpa, Culpeper, Virginia (both MINTER, born Virginia), Walter S (head, 29, wholesale grocer) and Mary E (wife, 24).

1920 United States Federal Census: in Catalpa, Culpeper, Virginia (all MINTER, born Virginia), Walter S (head, 39, commercial traveler), Mamie D (wife, 33) and Anna (daughter, 9).

There is some confusion about Walter's wife's name. No marriage certificate(s) has/have been found. The 1910 census showed Mary E Minter, 24: this is clearly a reference to Mary Emily DUNCAN, the mother of Walter's daughter Anna Elizabeth. The latter's (late 1943) birth certificate showed Mary Emily DUNCAN as mother but was signed (in 1943) by Mamie D Minter, age 57, mother. Walter's WW1 Draft Card (appears on the Smith/Stultz Family Tree as ancestry.com) showed his relative as Mamie Duncan Minter.
Since Mamie is a nickname for Mary, I believe 'Mary E' and 'Mamie D' are one and the same. So my record shows that Walter had but one wife, Mary Emily DUNCAN; her tombstone bears the name Mamie D Minter.

The following appears on an Ancestry.com message board:

THE HENRY BULLETIN, Fri., Feb. 4, 1921, p. 1, col. 2 [edited]. Mr. J. C. Minter was called to Culpepper, Va. the first part of the week by the death of his brother, Walter Semple Minter. Although Mr. Minter had not been in good health since suffering an attack of influenza about 18 months ago, the end came suddenly and as a distinct shock to his friends and relatives. He was a Martinsville reared boy and went to Culpepper in 1907 and formed a wholesale grocery company with S. E. Booker, also of Martinsville. Mr. Minter later accepted a position with a commercial house and was their traveling representative during the past few years. He was 42 years old, married and had one child, ten years old. He is survived by his widow and daughter Anna and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Cora Werth, Cordea, W. Va., Mrs. A. V. Christman, Martinsville, Miss Susie Minter, Staunton, Va., Dr. L. C. Minter, Atlanta, Ga., F. G. Minter, Roanoke, Sterling Minter, Winston-Salem, N. C. and J. C. Minter, Martinsville, also his mother, Mrs. S. A. Minter of Martinsville. Mr. Minter was buried in Culpepper, Va.
