Notes |
- Who were Matthew's parents? He was probably the son of Henry and Elizabeth Minter, and possibly the brother of William Minter, currently the 'head' of the Chelsea(2) group. The following baptisms appear in the baptismal register of St Luke's, Chelsea:
- 4 Jan 1818, born 7 Oct 1817, Henry William son of Henry & Elizabeth, Kingshott Brompton, sailor. This is a mystifying entry - 'Kingshott Brompton' appears to be an address but I can find no such place. On the other hand. Kingshott was the maiden name of the Elizabeth who married Henry Minter in St Martin in the Fields on 13 Feb 1817.
- 2 Nov 1828, born 11 Apr 1823, Matthew son of Henry & Elizabeth, Cook's Ground, chaff cutter.
- 2 Nov 1828, born 11 Aug 1827, Mary daughter of Henry & Elizabeth, Cook's Ground, chaff cutter.
- 30 Jan 1831, born 1 Jan 1831, John son of Henry & Elizabeth, Cook's Ground, chaff cutter.
- 28 Mar 1832, born 10 Mar 1832, John son of Henry & Elizabeth, Cook's Ground, chaff cutter.
August 2014: I looked at all the marriages that took place at St Luke's, Chelsea in 1816 and 1817 and did not find any Minters. (London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921, ancestry.com).
1841 census: the entry for Matthew (15, servant) in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea may refer to this Matthew.
1851 census: lodging at 4 Lewers Buildings, Chelsea, Matthew (27, horsekeeper). The surname on the census sheet looks more like MENTER than Minter.
When daughter Jane was baptised in 1857 Matthew & Sarah lived at 3 Church Street, Chelsea. Matthew a labourer. NB there is no subsequent trace of Jane.
1861 census: at 31 Lawrence Street, Chelsea, Matthew (40, waterproofer) and Sarah (32, laundress). Still at this address when son Matthew baptised in 1862; father a labourer. In 1866, just Lawrence Street, labourer.
When son John was baptised in 1869 Matthew & Sarah lived at 4 Lawrence Street, Chelsea.
1871 census: at 11 Lawrence Street, Chelsea, Matthew (48, labourer), Sarah (40), Matthew H T (9, scholar), Henry James (4, scholar) and John (1).
When daughter Mary Elizabeth was baptised in 1872 Matthew & Sarah lived at 6 Lombard's Buildings, Chelsea.
1881 census: at 4 Lombard Buildings, Chelsea, Matthew (59, bricklayer's labourer), Sarah (51), Matthew Hy. (19, bricklayer's labourer), Hy James (15), John (12) and Mary Elizabeth (10).
